SPECIAL ACTORS

For 30 years The Center has offered a full year of performing arts classes for special needs students ages 5-Adult that includes singing, dance, and acting. These classes are intended
to provide inclusion in an activity that sparks creativity, self confidence, social interaction and positive self-esteem. The classes culminate in a year-end performance.

These classes are funded by grants from the Earl Knudsen Charitable Foundation and the William V. and Catherine A. McKinney Charitable Foundation, FISA Foundation, and The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Acting through the Department of Community and Economic Development.

Classes meet weekly and follow a musical theater format. Students are placed in age appropriate levels and work with a team of teachers, assisted by student aides. A year-end musical performance is held each spring that is open to family, friends, and the public.
All interested students and parents should contact our offices for more information about curriculum, registration, and placement.

The Instructor will introduce a series of vocal warm ups, age appropriate songs, interpretive movements and theatrical games. The students will begin to explore their own own personal potential. These classes are intended to provide inclusion to an activity that sparks creativity, self-confidence, social interaction, and positive self-esteem.

This course works on developing the students’ abilities in singing, dancing, and acting. The instructors focus on each skill individually and then work to put them all together in a fun, creative and expressive way. The activities in this class are geared toward improving and enhancing the student’s self-image and self confidence. Imagination and creativity are essential components in this class. Through the use of age appropriate materials the instructor (s) ultimate goal is for each student to enjoy what he/she is learning through doing and to gain an appreciation for the arts.

Post-Gazette Coverage
It’s not unusual for Billy Hartung’s student dancers at the Center for Theater Arts inMt.Lebanonto fret over the frustrations of everyday life: car problems, a bad score on a test, difficulty performing a pirouette.

They are the day-to-day nuisances everyone experiences. On Thursday, Mr. Hartung, the executive director of the center, plans to introduce his students to people who haven’t let much larger frustrations get in the way of their accomplishments.

Performers from the New York City-based Heidi Latsky Dance Company, a group made of both able-bodied and disabled dancers, will conduct a class and workshop for Mr. Hartung’s students, as well as students in classes atMt.LebanonHigh School.
