Hartung Receives Honorable Mention for The Tony’s Excellence in Theatre Education Award

Behind every great performance is inspiration, and behind inspiration is a great teacher.

The Excellence in Theatre Education Award, sponsored by Carnegie Mellon University, is presented each year by the Tony Awards. A panel of judges comprised of the American Theatre Wing, The Broadway League, Carnegie Mellon University and other leaders from the theatre industry selects the winner, based on candidates submitted by members of the public.

THE EXCELLENCE IN THEATRE EDUCATION AWARD

Members of the public submit candidates for the Excellence in Theatre Education Award telling the story of a theatre educator who made a difference in their life, and the lives of others.

The award recognizes a K-12 theatre educator in the U.S. who has demonstrated monumental impact on the lives of students and who embodies the highest standards of the profession. This year’s top honor goes to Roshunda Jones-Koumba from G.W. Carver Magnet Hugh School in Houston, Tx.

In addition to the top honor, 18 honorable mentions were cited for their outstanding service to their students and focus on advancing theater education. CTA’s own Billy Hartung was among the honorees, and we are immensely proud of his achievements, and the program’s as a whole.

I am very appreciative and I wanted to say THANK YOU to the members of the CTA Board, parents and students who took the time to submit myself and the CTA  for consideration for the Tony Award Excellence in Education 2022  – presented by CMU.
